Attic and Decking Radiant Barrier

What it Does

RadianceTM Low-E Attic & Decking Radiant Barrier is applied like normal paint onto plywood decks, or properly prepared metal or masonry surfaces. It's a smart coating which slows the heat loss of a building in the winter, and slows heat gains in the summer. RadianceTM has microscopic reflective particles suspended in an infrared transparent binder matrix. In the winter more than 50% of the radiant heat which would normally escape is reflected back, slowing the loss of heat from the building. In the summer, it keeps more than 50% of the radiant energy from emitting into the building, keeping the building cooler and and its occupants more comfortable.

The left side of this sheet of plywood is coated with RadianceTM Low-E Attic & Decking Radiant Barrier, the right side is uncoated plywood.

The plywood was heated by conventional methods to 120 degrees. The RadianceTM coated side is emitting 14-16 degrees Farenheight less radiant energy than the uncoated side, as shown by the green color.

In the summer, this will result in less radiant energy being emitted into the building. In the winter, RadianceTM reflects radiant energy escaping from the interior. This will result in a warmer attic and insulation, which will slow heat loss. By slowing the heat loss, energy bills can be reduced, and damage from ice dams can be minimized.

Product Benefits

RadianceTM Low-E Attic & Decking Radiant Barrier helps reduce energy costs. As examples we will use typical homes in a hot climate, Phoenix, and a cold climate, Minneapolis. Both homes have standard residential HVAC equipment.

If the attics have been coated with RadianceTM Low-E Attic & Decking Barrier, the transmission of heat can be reduced 5-8% over the course of the year. This will result in a potential reduction of energy costs of 10-18%. These savings will result in an annual reduction year after year, paying for the initial costs many times over.

*Energy savings will vary depending on building materials, home location and conditions. Radiance™ has developed a computer model to help estimate savings.
